Overview
Nakupenda means “I love you” in Swahili, and one look at this place explains the name. It’s a narrow strip of pure white sandbank that rises out of turquoise water off Zanzibar’s west coast, visible only at low tide and surrounded on all sides by open ocean. There’s nothing built on it — no bars, no sun loungers, just sand, sea and sky — which is exactly what makes it one of the most photographed spots on the island.
The day is built around it: a boat trip out from Stone Town, snorkelling over nearby reef on the way, time to swim and relax on the sandbank itself, and a freshly grilled seafood lunch served right there on the sand with your feet in the water. It’s a full, easy day that needs nothing from you but sunscreen and an appetite.

Tour Plan
Hotel pickup — morning Your driver collects you from your hotel and transfers you to the departure point in Stone Town.
Boat departure — Board your boat and sail out from Stone Town toward Nakupenda, passing views of the old town and the coastline as you go.
Snorkelling stop — On the way to the sandbank, stop at a nearby reef to snorkel. Equipment is provided, and no experience is needed — calm, shallow water makes this an easy spot for first-timers as well as confident snorkellers.
Nakupenda Sandbank —Arrive at the sandbank as it emerges from the falling tide. Swim in the clear, warm water, walk the sand, take photos, or simply lie back and enjoy being in the middle of the ocean with nothing around you but blue in every direction.
Seafood lunch on the sand While you swim and relax, the crew grills a fresh seafood lunch usually including fish, prawns and squid depending on the day's catch, alongside rice, salad and fruit. Lunch is served directly on the sandbank, making for one of the most memorable meal settings on the island.
Return sail and transfer As the tide turns and the sandbank begins to shrink, sail back to Stone Town, where your driver returns you to your hotel.
