Overview

Off the northeast tip of Zanzibar, the waters around Mnemba Atoll are home to a resident pod of wild bottlenose and spinner dolphins — and this tour gives you the chance to see them in open water, on their terms, followed by snorkelling over one of the healthiest coral reefs in Zanzibar. It’s an early start, because dolphins are most active and easiest to find in the calm water of the morning, but guests consistently say it’s worth every minute of the alarm.

This is genuine wildlife watching, not a marine park — the dolphins are wild and free, so sightings and the chance to swim with them depend entirely on where they are that morning. Your boat crew knows the waters well and will do everything possible to find them, then it’s over to you: watch from the boat, or slip into the water and swim alongside them if conditions allow. Afterwards, cool off snorkelling over Mnemba’s coral gardens, home to turtles, reef fish and some of the clearest water on the island.

Tour Plan

Hotel pickup — very early morning Your driver collects you from your hotel before sunrise. Dolphins are most active early in the day, so this tour starts earlier than most.

Boat departure Board your boat at the beach and head out toward the waters off Mnemba Atoll, where the resident dolphin pods are most commonly found.

Dolphin search and swim — Your crew searches the water for dolphins, using their local knowledge of where pods tend to gather. When dolphins are spotted, the crew will position the boat and, conditions and dolphin behaviour permitting, invite you to slip into the water to swim and snorkel alongside them. This part of the day is entirely dependent on the dolphins — some days they stay close for a while, other days sightings are brief. Either way, your guide will do everything possible to give you the best chance.

Snorkelling at Mnemba Reef —  Move to the coral reef surrounding Mnemba Atoll, one of the most colourful and well-preserved reefs in Zanzibar. Snorkel over coral gardens home to reef fish, and keep an eye out for sea turtles, which are regularly seen in the area.

Return sail Sail back to shore, with fruit and drinks served on board as you relax after the morning's activity.
