Overview
Long before Zanzibar was known for its beaches, it was known for its spices the island sat at the heart of a global trade in cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and more, and that history is still growing in the ground today. This tour takes you through a working spice farm with a local guide who has grown up around these crops, where you’ll touch, smell and taste cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and other spices straight from the plant.
Most guests are genuinely surprised by how different raw spices look and smell compared to the jars at home vanilla growing on a vine, cloves as unopened flower buds, cinnamon peeled straight from bark. It’s a relaxed, hands-on couple of hours that gives real context to Zanzibar’s history and identity as the “Spice Island,” and usually finishes with fresh tropical fruit and the chance to buy spices directly from the farm.

Tour Plan
Hotel pickup — morning or afternoon Your driver collects you from your hotel and transfers you to the spice farm.
Farm walk and introduction — Walk through the plantation with your guide, stopping at each crop to see, smell and taste it where possible. Expect to encounter cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper, cardamom, turmeric, lemongrass and more, depending on the farm and the season. Your guide will explain how each spice is grown, harvested and processed, along with its role in Zanzibar's trading history.
Fruit tasting — Most visits finish with a tasting of fresh tropical fruit grown on or near the farm — a refreshing way to end the walk.
Spice shopping — Browse and buy spices, oils and local products directly from the farm, often at better prices and quality than in town markets.
Return transfer Your driver returns you to your hotel.
